2018-05-16/17 Nimes

Where does the time go? We have been actively trying to have down days, which suggest to me, perhaps are not getting our travel money’s worth.  I am the main culprit and saboteur of down time. I have spent my travel life engaging in tourist stigmata and find it hard to not explore until my feet are bleeding and bandaged.
All around town, we are watching the city get ready for Feria.  They do, indeed, know how to partay.

Throughout the Center Ville, porta-potties are being placed in the smaller back alleys and large city squares – handicap ones also. The storefronts begin being decorated with souvenirs. Bullfighting Stores are springing up, left and right. Suddenly we are seeing more young people in the streets, dragging wheeled luggage behind them. Tattoos and dreadlocks and beards – oh my!

It is decided to eat out tonight as all the restaurants will be full during the fete. Low and behold, we have found a Indian restaurant and plop ourselves down for a tasty talli plate. It is during this meal; the famous garbage video is made. We are there early – most restaurants do not start serving until 8pm. They let us sit anyway, serve us wine and place potato chips in front of us. I believe they do not have the tandoor oven hot enough for nan, so this is a reasonable replacement.  When the owner does appear with freshly baked nan, the offending potato chips are removed. Ha! We have a leisurely dinner and watch as the small alleyway off of the main thoroughfare, fills up with revelers.

All the bars are blasting music. This is just the first night of Feria and a weeknight at that. This is going to be a wild party.
Our landlady has explained to us when we arrived, that she was from an artistic family. We find an invitation to her brother’s art opening beside our apartment door. She has plans to open up the courtyard where we are staying for a show of her own. With all the crowds in town, this is a wonderful time to exhibit your work.
Yash Godebeska’s show is packed. With a family that has been in town continuously for 300 years or so, they have a large following. Tons of people are milling around on the outside of the venue.

His work is lovely and he has a great approach to lighting. As always, wine and cheese is served, with the extra classiness of bugellers to. Fancy American hor de oeuvres
